Soon after this is revealed Marnie disappears, leaving Anna alone again. The mystery of who exactly Marnie unfolds and finally Marnie appears before Anna again.

Thus, in terms of plot development, Marnie has to stop seeing Anna because she has to grow up e. The ensuing hocus-pocus with grandma flashbacks effectively terminates the queer storyline, explaining away the intimate relationship between two girls as a long-lost family connection.
